If you are familiar with the Charity & Taylor flag, you will probably know that it belongs to a business started by two marine electronics engineers over 50 years ago in Great Yarmouth.
The business has grown quite a bit since then and, in recent years, become part of Aage Hempel, an international group, which has given us strength in depth by providing our know-how with greater resources and facilities.
But whatever changes over time, the flag remains a reminder and a symbol of our purpose. It represents an ethos of reliability, customer care and quality service. We are, as we say, Customer Powered and Quality Driven.

Customer Powered
We are always powered by our customer’s needs by supplying, servicing and supporting for almost all major makes and types of navigational and communications equipment, and more.
We are also familiar with virtually all marine business sectors. Whatever your trade, we aim to help you keep your vessels and your business on the move.
Quality Driven
We work and apply our trade locally and aim to be available at quaysides across the UK, with sales and services centres and engineers from Scotland to Cornwall.
If a radar stops turning, an ECDIS fails, or you just require a radio survey, you will need and expect a speedy response. Yes, that’s right, we are ready to hit the decks running to get out there 24/7, 356 days a year to help when you call. And you only need call or email once for action.
The real power of any service such as ours depends on the quality of the people who do the work. They don’t just fix things, but make sure you have an effective solution. Their training, know-how and experience are there to help keep your vessel safe, operational and on the move.
Expanding our Network
Our network expansion of marine electronics service bases has started in earnest with Liverpool and Tyne Tees. These were added to our existing service centres in Aberdeen, Grangemouth, Gt.Yarmouth and Falmouth. And there is more to follow, with a new Service Base in Southampton later this year, all aimed to help maintain ships’ marine electronics, in key ports around the UK.
Careful attention is paid to providing the right engineering skills and spare parts on a 24/7, 365 days a year on a one-call solves all basis, quickly, efficiently and effectively. The efforts of our engineers are focussed on helping to ensure we can keep your ships compliant, on the move and trading.
A single email or call starts the ball rolling, identifying, where possible, the fault or part needed, sourcing the item and getting it fixed. We stock many commonly needed OME spares in the UK. And, as part of the Aage Hempel Group, we have access to a worldwide stock of some €3.5 million worth of equipment and parts.
GMDSS RADIO SURVEYS
Annual GMDSS Radio & AIS Surveys play a vital role in maintaining safety at sea. Surveys, inspections and checks significantly reduce emergencies and can help greatly toward maintaining uninterrupted operational capacity.
Charity & Taylor engineers are authorised by the MCA as Shore Based Maintainers and by all major Classification Societies to carry out annual GMDSS radio surveys on their behalf.
VDR ANNUAL PERFORMANCE TESTS
We are also qualified in Annual Performance Tests (APT’s) for Furuno, JRC and Danelec VDR equipment and to carry out annual tests for AIS, SSAS and LRIT equipment.
